T-Hunt Report 3-4-2006

Hidden "T" was located off Steele Cyn Rd. & Jamul Dr in a power line easement. 5 watts from an HT thru a 2 M band pass filter and into an 11 element beam pointed at Crest. Hunt started at 6:05 PM from Grossmont College and flashlights were spotted moving in towards the "T" about 6:50 PM. Marty, K6KTP and Tony WA6ZMZ were thought to have found it first. Bill, W6ZM, Cliff, KG6VAJ, Bryan, Bill's Son and Benny, Bill's brother-in-law were in close proximity at the time and after some discussion it was determined that Cliff would hide next time. by this time Tom, K6VCR and Joe, KE6PHB had also arrived on the scene. In real time everyone seemed to arrive pretty much at the same time resembling a Ham Fest or Real Estate Open House. Greg, KD6YQR and myself were watching from the warmth of the vehicle and the scene resembled a night maneuver in Iraq with one vehicle circling around with it's headlights on and many flashlights moving thru the brush towards the "T" in the dark. The only thing we lacked was night vision goggles to really appreciate the intensity of the hunt. Boll Weevil was the restaurant of choice for listening to excuses. Good Job Guys...less than an hour!

T-Hunt Report 11-19-2005

Last Saturday’s T-Hunt got off to a very slow start when the signal could not be heard very well at the starting point (Grossmont College). The main Transmitter was tested a mere 8 hours earlier and a signal could be heard from the college. Apparently the atmospheric conditions changed enough for the 5 watts going into a 2M/440 log periodic antenna to dissipated the signal somewhere out in the ozone layer! The main T was located under the bridge in some bushes in the vicinity of Waring Rd./Alvarado Canyon Rd./Adobe Falls Rd. and I-8. After several attempts to reconfigure the antenna we decided to give some direction clues, such as head for SDSU and hopefully they would pick up the signal. By that time it was 6:20 so we retreated to a strategic location in the brush on the side of the hill to observe the confusion. At 6:40 Tom, K6VCR and Joe, KE6PHB pulled into the parking lot closest to the main T. Two minutes later they left the area. At 6:51 Mike, KI6ACI and Tony, WA6ZMZ pulled into the same parking lot and also left after a couple of minutes. About 7:05 Mike and Tony arrived again, parked and located the main T in about 8 minutes, making them the winning team and responsible for the next hide/hunt. Tom and Joe arrived, again, as Mike and Tony were looking for the two micro-T’s and they also located the main T in a short period of time. At 7:28 Marty, K6KTP and Bill, W6ZM arrived. Bill was riding with Marty due to mechanical problems with his “Huntmobile”. Bill’s son Brian (call sign to come?) also arrived at the same time (in a Non-Hunt Vehicle) since he was following Marty so his dad would have a ride home from the hunt. Marty and Bill located the main T at7:41 and started looking for the micro-T’s, one was placed with the use of a ladder on a sign pole to the entrance to a canyon trail and the other was placed in a tree about 100 feet form the sign pole. I immediately disqualified Mary and Bill for using a 5,000,000 candlepower lantern that was carried in Bill’s jeep but used by Brian since the teams cannot help each other and that piece of equipment was not in Marty vehicle at the start of the hunt. Sorry about that Marty…. but rules are rules. Skip, W1NNI and Phil, N6WHK arrived during the excitement of everyone hunting the micro-T’s and when they looked at their watch is was close to 8:00 PM., the normal time to stop the hunt. They elected not to get all their gear out since I neglected to tell them that they had an additional 20 minutes since the hunt had started 20 minutes late. Sorry guys!
We collected all the transmitters and adjourned to Nicolosi’s , about 1,000 feet to the east where Greg, KD6YQR and Jim, KG6DVG and I had parked our vehicles so as not to attract attention to the intersection where the T’s were hidden. We all had some good Italian food and shared “Combat Hunt Stories” and a good Time was had by all, even Greg’s wife, Karen, who I suspect just came down for dinner but who has actually been on more T-Hunts than many of you on this reflector, and Yes you know who your are. Still don’t know if Karen is studying for her license?
Thanks to everyone for coming out and helping make the event lots of fun and learning something about T-Hunting! KK6I, Ron, our mystery hider from Kuala Lumpur (KL) had to cancel at about 4:00 PM but was there in spirit (frequency?)

T-Hunt Report 10-15-2005

Last Saturday's T-Hunt was focused on the corner of Merritt Blvd. and Mariposa St. which intersect almost on the overpass of SR-125 at the Spring Valley La Mesa boundary. There is no easy access to this overpass so it was decided to make this a mileage hunt. Greg, KD6YQR, Bryan, KG6SMT (our newest hider/hunter) and Joe, N6SZO converged on the site about 4:30 to set up the transmitters. The main T was an HT running 5 watts controlled by a Pic Con controller fed into a small mag mount that was horizontally stuck to the Cal-trans overpass railing. Two micro-T's were also strategically placed in the vicinity for practice. One placed on top of a Pac-Bell box that had lots of tree branches growing over it and the other was taped under the overpass railing with just a sliver of duct tape exposed so it would be "easy to find".
Hunt started at 5:15 due to some adjustments on the power levels and antenna locations so the signal could be heard from the Grossmont College Parking Lot. Thanks to Tuck, N6ZT for giving us some time to get things fine tuned while we were using Lyons Peak. ARES was using the frequency for the Miramar Air Show and delayed their roll call for awhile to allow us to get things dialed in. After we got all the T's started we retreated to a high vantage point across the freeway to observe the action.....
Marty, K6KTP and Erich, W6CCM were actually the first ones to be seen, they were zipping down 125 southbound so we knew that they probably not have the lowest mileage because it would take they many miles to turn around and find the site. Skip, W1NNI and his wife, Fredda, out on a T Hunt for the first time, were first seen at the intersection of the streets where the T's were located about 5:30 but more than likely had some attenuation in and did not hear the micro-T's and may have missed the signal on the main T and left the area not to be seen again til about 6:10 PM. At 5:43 Marty and Erich pulled up and stopped and located the main T, they had accumulated 10 mile from Grossmont. A few minutes later, about 5:46, Bill, W6ZM, Cliff, KG6VAJ and Brian, Bill's son, arrived and found the main T in a short time, they had 5.0 miles on their odometer (shortest driving distance from the college was about 4.4 miles) which made them the winners of this hunt. About 20 minutes later Skip and Fredda arrived for the second time and seeing such a crowd decided to stop this time and found the main T in less than two minutes from the time they stopped. While all this was going on most of the participants were having fun? trying to locate the two micro T's. The one under the bridge railing seemed to give everyone the most trouble. At 6:30 Mike, KI6ACI, Tony, WA6ZMZ and Joe, KE6PHB arrived and when they found out that we were going to eat at the Wranglers BBQ place in El Cajon they did not even bother to get out any sniffing gear. It could have been because they were hungry but it may have also been because they thought they might win and would have had to hide in a few weeks and since they had been winning so many hunts lately they may have wanted a break. Guess we will never know? A good time was had by all and after the County-Wide hunt on October 29th, we will be back to hunting in the dark. Hope to see more of you come out some time and by next summer it would be nice to get participation back up to 10 teams or more!
